Nafs at Peace
by Jaubi
On their debut album 'Nafs at Peace', Lahore-based quartet Jaubi presents an improvised fusion of spiritual jazz, North Indian classical music, and hip-hop. The album’s distinct sound arises from the interplay between traditional South Asian instruments, like the sarangi and tabla, and a modern ensemble of guitar, drums, and synthesizers, all captured in sessions in Pakistan and Norway. Conceptually, the music channels the Sufi idea of the self (nafs) to navigate personal and spiritual themes, creating a cathartic journey that balances composed ragas with funk-infused grooves and ambient electronic textures.
