Album Notes & Community Reviews

'Goldberg Variations' is presented here in Glenn Gould's debut recording, made in Manhattan over four days in June with producer Howard Scott, of Bach's aria and thirty contrapuntal variations, BWV 988. The recording sold 40,000 copies within four years and more than 100,000 copies by the time of Gould's death, establishing the then obscure work in the modern piano repertoire. Gould, aged twenty two at the sessions, had first played the work in concert the previous year.
