Fear
by John Cale
On 'Fear', his first of three albums for Island Records, John Cale moved away from the orchestral arrangements of 'Paris 1919' toward a more stripped-down and unsettling art-rock style. The album juxtaposes musically accessible, yet often bleak, song structures with Cale's distinctive deadpan vocal delivery, creating a work that is both compelling and unnerving. Produced with collaborators including Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music, the record's inventive and sometimes jagged sound is exemplified on tracks like "Gun," which features Manzanera's guitar processed in real-time through Eno's synthesizer.
