John Cale

John Cale

A Welsh multi-instrumentalist and founding member of The Velvet Underground, John Cale is a principal architect of avant-garde and experimental rock. [1, 2] His classically trained background, particularly his application of drone and amplified viola, merged with Lou Reed's street-level songwriting to forge a new musical vocabulary. [1, 7, 8] Cale's tenure with the band on its first two albums established a template of textural and structural innovation. [6] His subsequent solo career has navigated diverse styles, from orchestral pop to aggressive proto-punk, while his production work for artists like The Stooges and Patti Smith was instrumental in shaping their seminal debut albums.
