John Zorn utilizes his radical 'file-card' compositional method to create a jagged, cinematic homage to hardboiled detective fiction. 'Spillane' rapidly jump-cuts between screaming avant-garde jazz, sleazy electric blues, and tense, string-laden chamber music, anchored by the spoken-word narration of John Lurie. The album is an incredibly anxious, eclectic, and nocturnal masterpiece of downtown experimental music.
