Biography

John Zorn is a composer, bandleader, and alto saxophonist who has been a central figure in New York's avant-garde and Downtown scenes since the 1970s. His astoundingly prolific and eclectic output spans free jazz, hardcore punk, classical, klezmer, and noise, often within a single piece. He is renowned for his improvisational "game pieces" like 'Cobra' and his "file-card" compositional method. Key projects include the postmodern band Naked City, the influential Masada songbook which blends Jewish music with the language of *Ornette Coleman*, and the extreme metal trio PainKiller. He has released the vast majority of his work through his own influential record label, #Tzadik#.
