Inspired by the 17th-century philosopher Baruch Spinoza, 'Spinoza' is an instrumental work composed by John Zorn for his searing jazz-metal organ trio, Simulacrum. The album consists of two extended concerti that fuse heavy metal, jazz, funk, and atonality, performed by John Medeski on organ, Matt Hollenberg on guitar, and Kenny Grohowski on drums. One composition features Bill Frisell as a guest guitarist, while the other showcases Zorn himself on alto saxophone, with the musical mosaic flowing between aggressive intensity and ambient moods.
