Album Notes & Community Reviews
Released after a five-year hiatus, 'American Dream' channels the band's signature dance-punk and new wave sound into a darker, more introspective collection of songs steeped in art-rock and synth-pop. James Murphy's songwriting explores themes of aging, fear, and fractured friendships, with a sound palette that pays homage to influences like David Bowie and Brian Eno. The album's meticulous production balances cathartic, expansive arrangements with layered electronics, earning both critical acclaim and the band's first number-one record in the U.S., along with a Grammy Award for the single 'tonite'.
