Album Notes & Community Reviews

Commissioned to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Gil Scott-Heron's final studio album, Chicago-based drummer and producer Makaya McCraven radically restructures the original recordings. Utilizing his signature 'organic beat music' approach, McCraven frames Scott-Heron's weathered, poignant spoken-word vocals with loose, improvisational jazz loops and live instrumentation. It succeeds as both a respectful homage and a vital piece of modern jazz.
