That's the Way Love Is

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Released as Motown sought to capitalize on the massive success of its hit title track, the record effectively bridges the gap between the label's classic pop-soul era and the artist's burgeoning sociopolitical consciousness. The tracklist predominantly features interpretations of recent hits by his labelmates, delivered with his uniquely smooth, emotionally resonant vocal stylings. It served as his final traditional studio project before seizing complete creative control the following year.
