Biography
American soul singer and #Motown# cornerstone, born in Washington, D.C. After early work with *The Moonglows*, Gaye scored 1960s hits and duets with *Tammi Terrell* before the masterpieces 'What's Going On' (1971) and 'Let's Get It On' (1973). He was killed in Los Angeles in 1984. A perfectionist who fought Motown for creative control, Gaye helped pioneer the artist-led album era in soul music, and his duets and solo hits still anchor the genre's canon. His death at his father's hands remains one of popular music's defining tragedies.
