Deliberately alienating the massive audience garnered by their previous fast-paced thrash elements, Al Jourgensen steered the band into agonizingly slow, sludgy tempos. The production heavily stripped away synthesizers and rapid sequencing in favor of massive, feedback-drenched guitars and plodding live drums. The intensely bleak and punishing atmosphere polarized critics but stands as one of their most uncompromising artistic statements.
