As the thematic successor to 'A Crow Looked at Me', 'Now Only' continues Phil Elverum’s unadorned lyrical documentation of life after the death of his wife, Geneviève Castrée. The album expands upon its predecessor's sparse sound with longer, more structurally varied songs that incorporate richer instrumentation, including distorted electric guitars, piano, and drums, while retaining a direct, stream-of-consciousness vocal delivery. Through these musical evolutions and non-linear narratives, Elverum explores the absurdity of his new reality and the role of art in the grieving process with a stark, unflinching perspective.
