Acabou Chorare

Mentored by João Gilberto, Novos Baianos created 'Acabou Chorare' as a joyful counter-statement to the melancholic music prevalent under Brazil's military dictatorship. The album masterfully fuses traditional Brazilian forms like samba, choro, and baião with psychedelic rock, balancing Moraes Moreira’s intricate acoustic guitar work against Pepeu Gomes's distorted, Jimi Hendrix-inspired electric solos. Written and rehearsed in a communal hippie farmstead, the album's sound is defined by this collective spirit and resourceful production, which included recording on a four-track machine and modifying instruments with scavenged electronics.
