Continuing his collaboration with producer S. Carey, 'The Avalanche' serves as a thematic continuation of its predecessor, chronicling the dissolution of a marriage. Recorded again at April Base Studios, the album features a rich, orchestral-tinged sound palette with contributions from a string quartet and other session musicians. The songs are dense with Mike Kinsella's complex fingerstyle guitar and poignant, often brutally honest lyrics about heartbreak and transition.
