As the band's major-label debut, 'In Absentia' initiated a decisive shift into progressive metal, integrating heavier, distorted guitar riffs while retaining their signature melodicism and complex song structures. This new direction was anchored by the technical and powerful drumming of newcomer Gavin Harrison, complementing Steven Wilson's songwriting which explored dark themes of societal alienation and psychological disturbance, metaphorically framed by the album's title.
