Album Notes & Community Reviews
Orrin Keepnews commissioned Barretto's first album as a leader to catch the pachanga craze, and the conguero, fresh from four years replacing Mongo Santamar铆a in Tito Puente's orchestra, organized his Charanga Moderna for the sessions. The violins and French flute of the charanga front line carry arrangements largely written by Hector Rivera. Barretto followed it with the descarga session 'Latino!' the next year, before 'El Watusi' made him a pop hitmaker in 1963.
