Biography
Brooklyn-born Puerto Rican-American conguero and bandleader, a pillar of both salsa and Latin jazz. Barretto led the Charanga La Moderna to the 1963 hit 'El Watusi', then became a defining artist of #Fania Records# with 'Acid' (1968) and 'Barretto Power' (1970) and a driving force in the *Fania All-Stars*. Equally at home in jazz sessions, he later led the Latin-jazz band New World Spirit.
