Marking the apex of Rush's elaborate progressive rock phase, 'Hemispheres' is defined by its ambitious conceptual pieces and formidable musicianship. The album is anchored by the 18-minute title track, a multi-part suite that concludes the "Cygnus X-1" narrative by exploring a mythological conflict between the heart and mind, and is balanced by the band's first instrumental, the technically demanding, 12-section "La Villa Strangiato".
