Album Notes & Community Reviews
Sam Rivers's 'A New Conception' radically reinterpreted standard jazz repertoire. Accompanied by a quartet featuring Hal Galper, Rivers applied his avant-garde sensibilities and fierce tonality to familiar show tunes and ballads. The album remains a fascinating exploration of how free jazz methodologies could rejuvenate traditional frameworks.
