Biography

Sam Rivers was a formidable American jazz musician and composer, celebrated for his mastery of 'inside-outside' playing that bridged structured harmony and free improvisation. A multi-instrumentalist best known as a tenor saxophonist, he also excelled on soprano sax, flute, and piano. His mid-1960s albums for #Blue Note# Records, such as 'Fuchsia Swing Song' and 'Contours', are landmarks of adventurous post-bop. In the 1970s, he and his wife Beatrice founded Studio Rivbea, a legendary New York loft that became an essential hub for the avant-garde scene. His work is marked by intellectual rigor and a relentless creative spirit that continued until his passing.
