Dopesmoker
by Sleep
'Dopesmoker' is a monolithic, hour-long composition centered on hypnotic, downtuned guitar riffs and chanted vocals depicting a quasi-religious procession of "Weedians." The album's singular, colossal sound was partly achieved using custom-built Matamp amplifiers, which were too loud for the band to be in the same room with during recording. Its creation and subsequent rejection by London Records in 1996 led to Sleep's disbandment, cementing the album's legendary status as it circulated in unauthorized forms like 'Jerusalem' before its definitive version was officially released in 2003.
