Work Time

Work Time (1956) captures Sonny Rollins at a creative peak, recorded just after his stint with the Clifford Brown–Max Roach Quintet. With Max Roach on drums, Ray Bryant on piano, and George Morrow on bass, the album is a concise yet explosive hard bop session. Rollins’ tone is muscular and probing, stretching standards like “There’s No Business Like Show Business” into daring improvisations, while his ballad reading of “There Are Such Things” reveals his lyrical side. Though only four tracks, the record is a showcase of Rollins’ ability to balance thematic development with raw spontaneity—making it one of his most enduring early statements as a leader.
