Starflyer 59 [Gold]
by Starflyer 59
Officially self-titled but widely known by its monochromatic cover color, the Californian group's sophomore effort expanded upon their uniquely heavy, lethargic interpretation of shoegaze. Jason Martin's hushed, apathetic vocals are completely buried beneath monolithic walls of incredibly dense, fuzzed-out guitar distortion. The overwhelmingly loud, slow-moving soundscapes established them as premier American architects of the genre despite their association with the Christian alternative scene.
