The Forest and the Zoo

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Documenting a concert in Buenos Aires, this album features the soprano saxophonist leading a completely improvised, piano-less quartet with trumpeter Enrico Rava and South African drummer Louis Moholo. The two side-long tracks represent a severe break from the leader's earlier explorations of Thelonious Monk's music, plunging entirely into sparse, pointillistic free improvisation. It stands as a pivotal, highly abstract artifact of the global spread of avant-garde jazz.
