Steve Lacy

A singular force in jazz, Steve Lacy was a primary figure in establishing the soprano saxophone as a modern solo instrument. Starting in Dixieland, he quickly gravitated to the avant-garde, working with Cecil Taylor and becoming a foremost interpreter of Thelonious Monk's music. His own work is characterized by its melodic and structural rigor, even within free improvisation.
