Biography
A singular force in jazz, Steve Lacy was almost single-handedly responsible for reviving the soprano saxophone in the modern era. Born Steven Norman Lackritz, he began in Dixieland before becoming a key figure in the avant-garde, performing with pioneers like *Cecil Taylor* and *Gil Evans*. He is best known as the foremost interpreter of *Thelonious Monk*'s compositions, having recorded the first-ever all-Monk album, 'Reflections', in 1958. His own work, often for his long-running sextet, is characterized by its melodic and structural rigor, even within free improvisation. A prolific artist, he recorded for numerous labels including #Prestige#, #Soul Note#, and #Hat Art#.
