Album Notes & Community Reviews

Recorded with ambitious intentions but rushed production schedules, Styx's third album is a disjointed yet fascinating collection that pushes aggressively into hard rock and conceptual prog territories. Highlighting a battle for creative control, the tracklist careens between heavy, guitar-driven anthems and bizarre, avant-garde interludes, including the infamous spoken-word piece 'Krakatoa'. Though later disowned by vocalist Dennis DeYoung, its dense, occasionally overblown arrangements hold a cult appeal for enthusiasts of 1970s pomp rock.
