Album Notes & Community Reviews
Recorded during his transitional Chicago period in the late 1950s but released later on his own Saturn imprint, 'Rocket Number Nine' bridges the gap between conventional hard bop and Sun Ra's cosmic free jazz. The intricate horn arrangements and unconventional rhythmic structures provide early glimpses into his burgeoning Afrofuturist philosophy. The title track became one of his most enduring and frequently revisited compositions.
