Album Notes & Community Reviews
Comprised of material recorded between 1956 and 1958, 'Visits Planet Earth' showcases the early evolution of Sun Ra's ensemble arranging, heavily influenced by Tadd Dameron and Duke Ellington but injected with idiosyncratic dissonance. The record illustrates his mastery of post-bop idioms right before his full dive into free jazz cosmic explorations. It is a highly accessible entry point into his massive, sprawling discography.
