Serving as a transitional and somewhat turbulent chapter for the cult British indie group, this album reflects frontman Dan Treacy's increasingly chaotic personal life and shifting aesthetic interests. 'Closer to God' blends their foundational DIY indie-pop with darker, heavily psychedelic, and sprawling rock instrumentation. Despite its disjointed production history, the record retains the wry, bittersweet songwriting that made the band underground legends.
