Steering away from the ramshackle, 60s-obsessed indie pop of their earlier work, 'The Painted Word' reveals a much darker, intensely pessimistic artistic vision from frontman Dan Treacy. The lo-fi production is draped in melancholic psychedelia, reflecting deep personal turmoil and a bleak outlook on Thatcher-era Britain. It is widely considered one of the most poignant and uncompromising statements in the indie rock canon.
