Completely abandoning the screeching feedback of their debut, The Jesus and Mary Chain embraced a pristine, atmospheric production style heavily reliant on drum machines. 'Darklands' focuses entirely on William and Jim Reid鈥檚 melancholic, pop-oriented songwriting, delivering a nocturnal, bittersweet collection of alternative rock. It established a cleaner, more introspective jangle-pop template that heavily influenced the emerging shoegaze and indie pop scenes.
