Album Notes & Community Reviews

'Is This It' captures a raw, live-in-the-studio energy, built upon tightly wound twin-guitar interplay and a rhythm section that evokes 1970s garage rock. Producer Gordon Raphael's minimalist recording approach, which favored raw takes and a lo-fi aesthetic, enhances Julian Casablancas's detached, distorted vocal delivery and his lyrical observations on the lives and relationships of urban youth. The album's combination of melodic, pop-influenced songwriting and a gritty, unpolished sound became a watershed moment for the reinvention of guitar music in the new millennium.
