Operating as a fully fleshed-out live band rather than a duo relying on drum machines, the Johns crafted their most sonically robust and polished rock record to date. The highly eclectic arrangements incorporate everything from disco and funk to acoustic folk, supporting their trademark absurd, hyper-literate lyrical subjects. The album's famously challenging production ultimately strained their relationship with Elektra Records, marking the end of their major-label era.
