UB40's debut tied British reggae to unemployment, austerity, and multiracial working-class politics in late-1970s Birmingham. 'Signing Off' uses dub space, melodic horn lines, and relaxed vocal arrangements to frame socially conscious songs outside the more commercial pop-reggae sound the band later adopted.
