El derecho de vivir en paz
by Víctor Jara
Released during the politically charged era of the Popular Unity government in Chile, 'El derecho de vivir en paz' is a landmark work of the Nueva Canción movement. The album innovatively fuses traditional Andean folk instrumentation with the psychedelic-tinged rock of the band Los Blops, incorporating electric guitars and organs into its sound palette. Its lyrics are explicitly political, with the title track serving as a protest against the Vietnam War, while other songs champion social justice, criticize political indecision, and pay tribute to student activists. Following Víctor Jara's 1973 murder, the album was transformed into an enduring and powerful international anthem for peace and resistance against political oppression.
