A landmark album of the 1980s and a definitive statement from the 'Young Lions' movement. 'Black Codes' finds Wynton Marsalis leading his brilliant young quintet through a set of complex, powerful, and swinging compositions that reasserted the primacy of acoustic, bebop-derived jazz. The album won two Grammy Awards and is a showcase for the incredible musicianship and telepathic interplay of the group, particularly the dynamic rhythm section of Kirkland, Moffett, and Watts.
