Biography
Soviet-Russian composer born in Engels in 1934, the central figure of late Soviet music and inventor of 'polystylism', in which quotations and historical styles collide. His nine symphonies, concertos for performers including *Gidon Kremer*, and the Concerto Grosso No. 1 made him internationally known despite official obstruction at home. Schnittke moved to Hamburg in 1990 and died there in 1998.
