Biography

Ant贸nio Varia莽玫es was a Portuguese singer and songwriter from Amares whose two albums, 'Anjo da Guarda' (1983) and 'Dar e Receber' (1984), fused pop, folk, fado and new wave into a sound symbolising newly liberalised Portugal. A former hairdresser with a flamboyant, provocative image, he signed to #Valentim de Carvalho# in 1978 and broke through in 1982 with the single 'Estou Alem'. He died in Lisbon in 1984, aged thirty-nine, and is now recognised as one of Portuguese pop's great innovators.
