Biography
Aquarium, or Akvarium, is a Russian rock band formed in Leningrad in 1972 by Boris Grebenshchikov, its founder, singer and only constant member. A pioneer of Russian rock, the band grew from the Soviet underground of apartment concerts and home-recorded albums into a national institution, mixing folk, art rock, psychedelia and reggae with dense poetic lyrics. Landmark 1980s albums including 'Triangle' and 'Radio Africa' defined the Leningrad rock scene, and a second lineup from 1992 has carried the band, now based in Saint Petersburg, into the present.
