Biography

Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba is the Malian band of ngoni virtuoso Bassekou Kouyate, a griot from Garana near Ségou who had played with *Toumani Diabaté* and *Ali Farka Touré* before forming his own group in Bamako. Ngoni Ba, the big ngoni, layers several sizes of the ancient West African lute over percussion, fronted by singer Amy Sacko. 'Segu Blue' (2007) and the Grammy-nominated 'I Speak Fula' (2009) introduced the quartet worldwide, followed by the harder-edged 'Jama Ko', 'Ba Power' and 'Miri'.
