Malian musician Bassekou Kouyate dramatically elevated the profile of the ngoni, a traditional West African lute, with 'Segu Blue'. Leading a quartet entirely composed of differently sized ngonis, Kouyate modernized ancient griot traditions through virtuosic playing and intense rhythmic interplay.
