Biography

Black Flower is a Belgian quintet founded in Brussels in 2014 by saxophonist and composer Nathan Daems, with cornetist Jon Birdsong, drummer Simon Segers and bassist Filip Vandebril. Their hybrid jazz reworks Ethio-jazz through funk, Afrobeat, dub and Eastern scales, heard on 'Abyssinia Afterlife' (2014), 'Artifacts' (2017) and 'Future Flora' (2019). Keyboardist Karel Cuelenaere replaced Wouter Haest in time for 'Magma' (2022), whose organ-led, dub-heavy sound marked a new phase, continued on 'Kinetic' in 2025.
