Biography
Charles Ives (1874-1954) was an American composer who worked in insurance by day and wrote visionary, experimental music in private. Drawing on hymns, marches and the sounds of his Connecticut childhood, works like the 'Concord Sonata', 'The Unanswered Question' and the Fourth Symphony anticipated much of twentieth-century modernism. Ignored for decades, he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1947 and is now regarded as an American original.
