Biography
Baltimore-born drummer and swing bandleader whose orchestra ruled Harlem's Savoy Ballroom through the 1930s. Chick Webb overcame spinal tuberculosis to become a virtuoso drummer, admired by *Buddy Rich*, and his band's precision made it the standard other big bands were measured against. He discovered and featured singer *Ella Fitzgerald*, and their 1938 recording of 'A-Tisket, A-Tasket' brought the orchestra national fame shortly before his early death in 1939.
