Biography
French composer from Saint-Germain-en-Laye whose 'Pr茅lude 脿 l鈥檃pr猫s-midi d鈥檜n faune' (1894), opera 'Pell茅as et M茅lisande' (1902) and orchestral sketch 'La mer' (1905) broke with nineteenth-century German tradition. Debussy's piano music, including the 'Pr茅ludes' and 'Clair de lune', uses whole-tone colour and unresolved harmony to evoke atmosphere over argument. He died in Paris in 1918, leaving a body of work that influenced composers from *Igor Stravinsky* to *Bill Evans*.
