Biography
Fela Kuti and the Africa 70 were Fela Kuti's Nigerian Afrobeat band from 1970 to 1979, succeeding his *Koola Lobitos* and *Nigeria 70* lineups. Anchored by drummer and musical director Tony Allen and baritone saxophonist Lekan Animashaun, the band's horn players, guitarists, bassists and percussionists powered the albums recorded at the Kalakuta Republic and the Afrika Shrine in Lagos, including 'Gentleman', 'Expensive Shit' and 'Zombie'. The group broke up after the 1978 Berlin Jazz Festival exodus, and Kuti replaced it with *Egypt 80*.
