Biography
Frederic Rzewski (1938 to 2021) was an American composer and pianist from Westfield, Massachusetts. A Harvard and Princeton graduate who studied with *Luigi Dallapiccola*, he co-founded the improvisation ensemble *Musica Elettronica Viva* in Rome in 1966. His music often carried explicit political commitments, above all 'Coming Together' from 1971 and the piano variations 'The People United Will Never Be Defeated!' from 1975, now a cornerstone of the modern repertoire. He taught composition at the conservatoire in Liège from 1977 and remained an active performer of his own demanding piano works.
