A saxophonist, composer, and foundational figure of both Chicago's AACM and the legendary Art Ensemble of Chicago, Roscoe Mitchell pioneered a radical new language in free improvisation. Shifting the focus from traditional melody, his approach emphasized texture, timbre, space, and the profound use of silence. This vision was fully realized through the Art Ensemble's guiding philosophy of "Great Black Music: Ancient to the Future," creating a revolutionary synthesis of musical history and fearless experimentation.
