Fugazi

Fugazi

Fugazi formed in Washington, D.C., in 1987, emerging from the city’s hardcore scene to define a rigorous post-hardcore sound and an uncompromising ethical framework. [1, 2] The band integrated funk, dub, and reggae rhythms with irregular song structures and dynamic, interlocking guitars. [1, 10, 16] This sonic architecture, built on the rhythm section of drummer Brendan Canty and bassist Joe Lally, supported the dual vocal and guitar work of Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto. [10] Operating entirely outside the mainstream music industry, they self-managed and released all material on Dischord Records, establishing a legacy of artistic autonomy and influencing generations of independent musicians.
